Learn more about differentiating yourself as an insurance agent.

Insurance is a popular industry. There are lots of different types of jobs and many companies are hiring right now, making it an attractive business to consider. With so many other people going into insurance, you may be curious about how to stand out in the growing crowd.

There are many ways you can differentiate yourself as an insurance agent. Read on for our top tips on standing out among your peers and colleagues then reach out to us at American Senior Benefits for more agent tips.

Differentiate Yourself From the Crowd

Stand out as an insurance agent by following our top tips for differentiating yourself from the crowd of competitors.

Focus on a niche. Find your specialty, whether this means a certain line of coverage, geographic region, or type of policy you know inside and out. Study and learn as much as you possibly can about your chosen niche. Become the expert and the agent everyone goes to about the topic.

Establish yourself as a thought leader. Once you have determined your niche and become an expert, you need to tell others about your expertise. Become a thought leader by posting on LinkedIn or other professional forums. Offer help and advice to others. Write articles and submit them to trade publications. Host a webinar or seminar discussing your niche and how you can help people who need your expertise. Apply to speak at professional conferences where you can educate others and connect with more experts.

Provide excellent customer service. Giving every customer the best service possible should be your goal anyway, but if you want to stand out from your peers you have to deliver excellence in every single interaction. Do not forget to respond quickly to communications and to provide thorough help. Thank people for doing business with you. Make it low effort and simple for potential customers to work with you. Ensure you partner with the best industry vendors and carriers so you can guarantee a quality product to your customers and potential clients.

Earn industry credentials. There are many people who enter the insurance and risk management industry every year. But few pursue advanced education in insurance. There are several organizations that offer credentialing programs you could obtain. These designations are respected in the industry and show others you are a professional who has taken the time to hone their craft. Most professional designations also require ongoing continuing education so you can keep your skills current. Consider the CPCU® (Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter), CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor), or AAI® (Accredited Adviser in Insurance) in your search for a designation to help insurance agents.

Join a professional organization. There are many professional organizations dedicated to helping independent insurance agents and brokers. Join a group or two and get involved. Most professional organizations offer member discounts, networking opportunities, continuing education, and opportunities for leadership and mentorship. Because not everyone takes the time to become an active member of a professional organization, you can differentiate yourself by joining a relevant group and getting involved.

Volunteer locally. Agents are often a cornerstone of their communities. By volunteering your time with local groups and charities, you can establish yourself as an important member of the local community. This sets you apart from other businesses and professionals who do not give back with their time and talents. Volunteer opportunities abound, from sponsoring a local youth sports team to joining a Habitat for Humanity build in your town. Any volunteering you and your teammates do benefits everyone — and helps differentiate you from the crowd at the same time.
